VAGUE uses the visual language of fashion editorials as parody, placing socially disapproved behaviour inside an aesthetic associated with status, beauty and desire.

The work emerged from my interest in historical genre painting and what I describe as bourgeois voyeurism: the tension between condemning certain behaviour and taking pleasure in looking at it.

Drinking, excess, vulnerability and loss of control are not presented simply as moral subjects. The painting also turns attention towards the viewer: what are we attracted to, what do we judge, and how quickly do we believe we understand the person we are looking at?

This experiment marks a shift towards a more deliberate and restrained painting practice, exploring how contemporary genre painting can hold ambiguity without immediately
